Bowl after bowl at the Odaiba Ramen Park.

Day 43:

It's my day off!!! I heard that there was a new ramen park in Odaiba so I immediately called up Nate and without hesitation we were off to go check it out. We met up in Shinjuku, then found our way to Shimbashi to hop on the Yurikamome to Daiba Station. The Odaiba Ramen Park is being presented by Fuji Television. Some think it's in response to the recent Tsukemen Event presented by Asahi Television, which by the way yours truly was a part of. Anyway, if you thought my posts have recently been lacking pictures, hopefully this one will make up for it.

We got there exactly when it opened at 11am and the place was practically empty. Of course, this event was being held directly in front of the Fuji TV building, which is directly across the street from the Aqua City mall.

We both skipped breakfast so being hungry was not part of the problem. The hard part was choosing which of the 9 different shops we wanted to eat at. The rundown included:
  • R1: スパイスTV どーも☆キニナル!- Apparently this is a Tan Tan Men created by the stars of a popular tv program.
  • R2: BeeHive - Presenting their 塩ラーメン (Shio Ramen) "Naminori"
  • R3: 麺家 うえだ・サイロック軍団 - A Menya Ueda and Psylocke Gundan collaboration presenting 焦がし醤油らーめん (Kogashi Shoyu Ramen). Could there be X-Men involved?
  • R4: 麺劇場 玄瑛 - Mengekijyou Gen-ei presenting 海老香麺 (a shrimp-fragranced ramen).
  • R5: キャンパスナイトフジ x 元楽 - A Campus Night Fuji and Genraku collaboration presenting キャンナイ初体験ラーメン (campus night first sexual experience ramen).
  • R6: せたが屋 - Setagaya presenting 魚介醤油ラーメン (Gyoukai Shoyu Ramen).
  • R7: めん徳二代目つじ田 - Mentoku Nidaime Tsujita presenting 味噌ラーメン (Miso Ramen).
  • R8: ミオパン - Miopan presenting ミオパンラーメン (Miopan Ramen).
  • R9: 麺や 七彩 - Menya Shichisai presenting 真トマトつけ麺 (Shin Tomato Tsukemen).

I chose to go with Menya Shichisai first. Although they were featuring a Tomato Tsukemen, there was also a Tomato Ramen and that's what I went with.

The guys working there were totally cool and after a 5 minute conversation, it turns out that I live fairly close to their honten. They invited me to check it out and of course I will. I've heard nothing but good things about Shichisai.

I ordered my Tomato Ramen with "high collar" parmesan cheese.

It tasted like a diluted Campbell's Tomato Soup with noodles and a distinct chicken stock in the background. It was unusually good and the cheese made it taste like a soupy-spaghetti. It possibly could've used some ground meat but I still liked it.

Nate chose to go with Mengekijyou Gen-ei and their shrimp-fragranced ramen for round one.

It was remarkably fresh and fragrant with a light さっぱり (sappari) flavor. The braised meat was delicious and the hand-kneaded noodles rocked!

For round two I chose Tsujita and I'm so effing glad I did. From the first sip it was so effing amazing.

The dudes working there weren't as cool as Shichisai, but they were also busier.

Seriously, I think both Nate and I were both blown away by Tsujita's Miso Ramen.

Even their noodles really represented the classic Sapporo chew quite well. This definitely calls for a trip to their honten!

Round two for Nate was Menya Ueda and Psylocke Gundan collabo. Beware of old lady with blowtorch! Haha. She's the owner of Menya Ueda.

The Kogashi Shoyu Ramen was intriguingly interesting. The shoyu flavor was mildly deep with that obvious burnt taste, but I also felt it was lacking something. I'm not saying that it was bad, but it definitely could've been better. I expect a little more from a mama holding two blow torches!

The third round for the both of us decided to be BeeHive's Shio Ramen. Hands down, BeeHive had the cutest workers. Haha, but you wanted to know about their ramen right?

It was clean and refreshing, but I'm not sure if I'd ever make the trip to Chiba to try it again. I wasn't really diggin' the noodles either.

Nate ordered his with the Roast Tomato topping. It altered the flavor of the soup just a tad in the positive direction. I'd definitely go with the tomato topping next time.

After three bowls each, it was time to rest and take a nice stroll around the area. Nate pointed this out, but if you look closely at the picture below, it contains the fake liberty bell, the fake statue of liberty, the fake brooklyn bridge, and the fake eiffel tower all in one shot. Haha.

Regardless, it was a great view.

Inside Aqua City mall we came across this great store. I went to the museum on the right and Nate went to the one on the left. Somehow we ended up in the same darn spot.

Then we decided to chill on the cush couches of Starbucks. Dang we were full!

After an hour or so, we were staring at numerous disco balls and wondering what the...

Then we somehow managed to make it up to Saikyo Raakoku, the ramen park within the Aqua City Mall, for some more ramen.

Werd...

We weren't sure which one to try so we just went for a mini bowl at the leftmost shop, Gokuichi. Apparently the dude who owns this place has been gaining popularity in recent months.

Black Tonkotsu Ramen is their claim to fame. It looks good but can it live up to the hype?

Reluctantly, that would be a no. I wanted this ramen to be good but unfortunately it was the biggest disappointment of the day. Oh well, there's always next time.

Nate was so distraught that he kept playing this game over and over again wondering why he couldn't win anything. Haha j/k.

What a day...please don't wake me...

Mitsuwa Hokkaido Fair 2009 - Recap

Fresh off the plane from Japan, I dropped off my suitcase and headed straight for Mitsuwa Market and the 2009 Hokkaido Ramen Fair! Yes, I did say ramen fair cuz who really cares about the other stuff (j/k).

Anyway, Ezo Fukuro at the Costa Mesa location was first up with their Shrimp Butter Shio Ramen and their Shio Tanmen. To put it lightly, I wasn't very impressed. The Shrimp Butter Ramen was basically the Tanmen with 3 pieces of shrimp and a half cube of butter. I also thought the butter neutralized a lot of the flavor from the yasai itame. And the noodles in both were starchy and undercooked. If I had to choose one, I'd stick with the Tanmen.

Ramen Shingen, working out of Torrance, was surprisingly better than I had expected. It was light, yet flavorful and gave my tongue a tingly sensation. Oh wait, that was the MSG. The chashu was the highlight--very moist and delicious. The noodles were once again slightly undercooked but I'm sure it would taste much better if I was in Ishikari.

That's all. Forgive me for not adding much detail. I'm still jet lagged.

Tatsunoya (龍の家) - Mitsuwa Kyushu & Okinawa Fair 2009

Rarely do I wake up and crave a good bowl of tonkotsu ramen, but today was different. Tatsunoya is in town for the Kyushu & Okinawa Festival at Mitsuwa Torrance and I hear their ramen is "BOMB!"

Straight out of Kyushu (Kurume to be exact), Tatsunoya's ramen has been influenced by both Hakata and Kurume styles. (If you want to know more, check out Nate's blog.) Normally, there are two ramen on the menu, but this weekend's fair only showcases the Koku-aji as opposed to the Assari. Unfortunately, the Torokeru Pudding didn't make the trip either.

Okay, so it may not be exactly like how it's served in Japan, but Tatsunoya's tonkotsu ramen was indeed ticking. Every sip of the smooth, salty, pork bone soup brought my tastebuds closer to exploding.

Mixing up the special miso paste into the soup provided a much bigger bang that tingled my tongue and massaged my inner cheeks.

The chashu was interestingly hard on the edges, but very moist in the center. The contrast initially pinched my eyebrows together, but then it led to an understanding smirk. The noodles were typical Hakata/Kurume style straight & thin.

Although the ramen was BOMB, these special flan-stuffed-cream-puffs from Kikuya were amazingly good. Seriously, don't miss out on these either!

Tick...tick...BOOM!

Ezo Fukurou (えぞ梟) - Mitsuwa Umaimono Gourmet Fair 2009

In the midst of my recent Sapporo posts, Ezo Fukurou zooms into LA for the weekend with perfect timing. Occupying a space in the Mitsuwa Food Court during this year's Umaimono Gourmet Fair, this ramen-ya from Hokkaido (?) brings it's Sapporo-style miso ramen with a fat slice of butter and a handful of corn. There's also a nori-tamago gohan for $1 if you feel like eating rice. Anyway, I arrived around 1:30pm and was shocked to see so many people. It took at least 40 minutes to wait in line, order, and pick up my ramen. Was it worth it? I guess so...

Miso Butter Corn Ramen: Described as "たっぷりコーンの味噌バターらーめん", which translates as "a sh**load of corn on top of miso butter ramen", this ramen was...pretty good. I mean, I've been a little spoiled lately so I wasn't really expecting much. And it was good to see that they still wok'd the soup (a miso ramen tradition) with all the ingredients right before pouring it on top of the noodles. I didn't see much corn on top, but most of it just sank to the bottom.

The butter really mellowed out the flavor. It's sort of like putting padding on the outfield wall. It lessens the impact of the miso but you can still taste it. I personally prefer it without the padding and enjoy the sting. You can also feel the butter coat your lips as you slurp. Sort of like kissing a girl (or guy if you prefer) who's wearing too much chapstick.

The thick, 2x4 pieces of menma were sadly disappointing. They were too hard and it felt like I was chewing on raw sugarcane. Okay, maybe not that hard but it was very stringy. The chashu had good flavor but it felt a little too chewy. Alright, I've definitely become too picky.

Alas, the noodles. I love Sapporo-style noodles. Good stuff! And the corn...is just sweet corn.

Fyi: I wrote that ? above because a search of Ezo Fukurou using the Ramen Database didn't turn up any results. Does anyone know where the honten in Japan is?

Asameshi Maeda Honpo - Mitsuwa Hokkaido Fair 2008 (Costa Mesa)

Umm...guess what I had for dinner?...nevermind that was a dumb question. After visiting Sumire earlier today, the only thing on my mind has been Asameshi's Asahikawa shoyu ramen. I originally planned to go tomorrow, but what the heck...I was hungry and they were open.

Shoyu Ramen: If you remember from the last time they were here, the noodles were not very impressive and some even called them the "Achilles heel of the ramen." Well guess what ed, they got better! No more starchy/sticky/pasty texture. They actually meshed with the rest this time. The thinly sliced shabu-shabu-style chashu was better than I remember and the long slender menma was as good as ever. The rustic-nature of an Asahikawa shoyu always gets my blood flowing--and Asameshi Maeda Honpo was no different.

If you missed them in February, you have no excuse to miss them this weekend!

Sumire - Mitsuwa Hokkaido Fair 2008 (Torrance)

Did you really think I'd skip this? Being that I'm still detoxing from my trip, I contemplated whether I should go or not...for a second.

Miso Butter Corn Ramen: Since I've already tried their miso ramen earlier this year, there was no hesitation in ordering the butter corn version. As usual, the ramen was piping hot and once again I burnt my tongue (it's still numb). Well I'm not much of a butter and corn fan, but it was intriguing how the butter masked the mild spiciness of the miso and added a smoothness to the soup. The rest of the toppings were good like before, but I would have liked to see more of the diced chashu. I also noticed something else--ground pork? Anyway, the noodles were great and I made sure to grab my tray as soon as my number was called.

Although I enjoy Sumire's signature miso ramen, I can't wait to see their shoyu and shio someday. Here's a picture of the other booths. The curry pan looked delicious!
