Gramps just being gramps...

Day 737:

He never shows excitement when I duck my head through the door, but I can tell he's happy to see me. He never mentions how long it's been since I last came in, but I can tell he wished to see more of me. Gramps is a simple man, living a simple life through the cards that were dealt to him, and cherishing every waking moment. He never complains if it's slow, he doesn't panic if it gets busy, and he's always honest. I admire that about him.

The selfish part of me keeps me from coming back more often, but I'll try to change that. I still want to be a part of Gramps' life.

Gramps is awesome. I asked him how he makes his curry roux and he just showed me right there.

Gramps just being gramps. Gotta love him for that!

Homeward soul...

Day 623:

The typhoon was beginning to wreak havoc and I was starting to worry about my flight home. But before I headed to the airport I needed to say bye to gramps.

I told him I was leaving for three weeks and he cooked me up a special Umani Ramen so I wouldn't forget him. Don't worry gramps, you'll never be forgotten.

I seem to have the most interesting luck when it comes to travelling. When I tried to call a taxi to pick me up and give me a ride to Shinjuku Station, the phones were all busy because of the damn typhoon. So without any other choice I walked to the nearest busy street in pourrrring rain with my luggage in tow and finally hailed a taxi after getting drenched from head-to-toe. I was soaking wet, but that wasn't what I was worried about. Due to this delay, I missed my train. And since the express trains weren't functioning normally cuz of the typhoon, I had to take the local ones. Needless to say, I was cutting it close.

But I made it...barely. C'mon let's get this plane in the air! A typhoon is coming!!

Okay, please get me off this plane.

After a short flight, I had a 6-hour layover in South Korea. Is that a spaceship? I tried to go to Seoul city but the lady at the information desk advised me not to. It was 8pm and the buses and trains would all end in the next two hours, making it difficult for me to return to the airport for my 1am flight. Alright, let's go get some ramen.

Unfortunately, the only ramen (or should I say ramyun) in Incheon International Airport were lining the shelves of 7-11. Nevermind the ramen, time to hang out in the lounge.

The regular lounge was under construction so they let me into the first class lounge. Woo! After a few beers I just fell asleep.

Until it was time for my 11-hour flight.

Are we there yet?

LAX!!

Well hello there assistant...

ただいま!

Day 514:

Ahhh...日本だ!!

Upon arriving in Shinjuku, I let the girlfriend have first choice over what to eat for lunch. Still on her Thai kick, she chose Thai ramen. I'm down with that.

Khao San ramen!

Then as soon as I got home, there was only one person I wanted to see.

Hi Gramps!! It's been so long he thought I had gone back to cali. I don't blame him.

I think he missed me as much as I missed him. Thanks Gramps!!

Then it was time to continue tradition.

And say whattup to the fellas.

Recognize my replacement?

Ooh...

Ahh... I'm gonna miss this place.

As gifts from our friends in France, we were given some very local beer--Brasserie du Chardon. I drank a couple bottles.

Then immediately passed out...

Routine...

Day 391:

It was back to my old routine. Pay a visit to gramps...

Eat some katsu curry...

Heed a few words of wisdom...

Chow down on a whopper from Boom (or hooper as mom would say)...

Slurp some noodles...

And play with one of the stray cats on my way home.

Just routine. Gramps says hello. He is doing just fine. I showed him the video of Bassanova on tv and he seemed proud. I ought to visit him more often.
