新函館塩ラーメン [マメさん] (Mame-san) Instant 生 Ramen

When I was 5, my mom took my brother and I to Hakodate (from Tokyo) so we could be one of the first to ride the new 2-story Shinkansen (bullet train). And being a 5 year-old who just cared about Doraemon and Ultra Man at the time, I apparently complained (along with my brother) the entire trip. So instead of eating at a restaurant that served the famous Hakodate squid and crab, we ended up just entering a local ramen-ya and heading home straight after.

In all honesty, I don't even remember eating ramen that day. For all I know we could have been eating Mame-san's Hakodate Shio Ramen, but I doubt it. Anyway, enough about me. Mame-san opened in 1969 and his Shio Ramen was so popular that he would sell 400 bowls of ramen a day. And that's in a ramen-ya with only 11 seats! Amazing! But after three years he regretfully had to close shop in order to manage his family's noodle company and it wasn't until 30 years later that the Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum had asked Mame-san to recreate and resurrect his famous shio ramen. All I have to say is ありがとうございました!


The contents include:
  • Mineral-laced noodles with funori.
  • Hakodate Shio Ramen Soup.


I almost tossed these noodles thinking that they were growing mold. Luckily, I read the warning label on the package stating that the green dots were not mold but seaweed! How interesting, I thought! I couldn't wait to try them.


This is THE BEST Shio Ramen that comes in a box...PERIOD! With chicken buoillon mixed with saba and katsuobushi dashi, this bowl takes shio ramen to unexpected heights! Enough said!


The noodles are also one of the best I've ever tasted. There's something magical occuring with it's funori mixture. A perfect texture with a perfect taste. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......


What a way to end my recent batch of instant ramen. I'm not sure how to follow this up. Hmmm, I guess I'll have to go to make a visit to the homeland again. Stay tuned for some posts from Japan later this month! Jaane!

    Hi Keizo,

    Wow! The best packaged Shio Ramen ever?! (O_o) I'm so jealous! :) I'll have to make note of this brand.

    So, it sounds like you're going back to Japan soon? Very nice! Can't wait to hear which places you try. :)

    Interesting...seaweed-laced noodles. Sounds good! Can't wait for your next set of reviews from Japan! ...Actually...maybe I can...they just make me hungry and jealous! Hahaha!

    Yes, I can't wait to go back! I'm planning on climbing Mt. Fuji on the 25th so hopefully the weather will be nice. I heard there's ramen up there so I'll have to check it out. I'm not sure if I'll go crazy like my last trip (17 bowls in 8 days) but I'll definitely try to do a daily post of some kind.

    If you're in the area, Ivan Ramen might be interesting. It's a ramen place open by a caucasian. Dunno if it's any good though.

    @edjusted: I read about Ivan during my last trip but it was a little out of the way and I ran out of time. I'll try to go this time although I've heard much of his hype is just cuz he's caucasian. I'll let you know!
