Katz's...

Day 1078:

When I first learned that I would be going to New York for the FoodFilmFest, there was only one thing on my I-must-try-while-I'm-in-NY list. No, it wasn't ramen, nor was it dim sum.

So when the rest of the boys arrived early this morning, the first place we went was here...

Katz's!!

And if you don't know why I wanted to come here so badly...

Let me show you.

Nobo and Boom decided to share a pastrami sandwich.

And Boom's half was gone in 3 seconds...flat.

Slurping Katz's pastrami was just as good slurping ramen. A life-long craving has now been fulfilled.

Time to get back to our regularly scheduled program. Since Kuboya in the East Village was closed...

Minca Ramen Factory right next door was our next best choice.

Minca Sio Ramen.

Miso Ramen.

Minca Shoyu Ramen.

Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen.

Minca, Minca, Minca...

I had heard good things...

And it's too bad cuz Wakayama Ramen is one of my favorite styles.

On to the next batter.

I walked by Kambi (Minca's sister) on my way to Union Square and then kept walking.

Ahh, Union Square...thank you for free wifi.

On to the republic...

For which it stands.

Not for me, but for the assistant...

  1. I apologize for the awful ramen you had today in NYC. Minca is pretty awful, Kambi is actually worse, they do bad versions of Jiro Kei, and really god awful rendition of Gyokai Tsukemen. Terakawa, and Misoya are decent. Some of the midtown places like Tsushima are pretty good, but lunch only.

  2. You've been reviewed - in French ! My Food & Film website picks one Festival entry per day. Today being "I love Japan", and me loving Japan, I focused on some of the Japanese films in competition. Wish I was here to taste your soups ! Best of luck for tonight.

  3. I am surprised at your response at Minca. I feel they have a better bowl of ramen in the city with deep flavored broth, albeit salty, and good chasu and noodles.
Misoya is good also, though different style.
Don't even bother with Terakawa. Their quality is inconsistent.
Do go try Hide-chan in mid-town east.
