Chitown!!!...

Day 1107:

Hello Chicago! After a grueling 15 hours on the plane (with a stopover in Seoul), it was good to see Will and Nicole at the airport. Thanks for picking me up guys!!

Chicago Theater!! No this won't be the site of this year's FoodFilmFest. Maybe next year! haha.

Of course my first meal in Chicago would have to be...ramen. Voted best ramen in Chicago last year, Slurping Turtle was first on my list.

Gyoza.

Duck Fat Fried Chicken.

Miso Ramen.

Tonkotsu Ramen.

Shoyu Ramen.

Best ramen in Chicago? I think I might be in for a treat. All of these were lacking body and had no depth whatsoever. The noodles were brittle and although I slurped them all, I couldn't kanshoku the entire bowl. The soup was just too salty in the end.

Shopping time!

Restaurant Depot is great!

Kendall College! The site for this year's FoodFilmFest!

Seth picked us up some hot dogs from Weiner Circle. Amazing! But he forgot the chocolate shakes!

Alright, time to get my hands dirty.

After a little prep help, it was time for dinner at Old Jerusalem in Old Town where George and Seth were enjoying their morning tv taping on abc7.

Then Seth and I decided to go across the street for some ramen at Tokyo 21.

Tonkotsu Ramen.

Shoyu Ramen.

I think the look on Seth's face says it all. This was right after he said "dude, my bamboo shoot is still frozen."

I'm sorry Tokyo 21, but this was as far as I could get.

The FoodFilmFest crew!!

Washing my mouth out with some Genesee.

And some La Petite Mort.

Tomorrow, I will kiss the sky...

  1. Yeah Americans need to learn what good ramen tastes like so they can cook good ramen. Considering many learned from eating instant ramen it's not surprising a lot is lacking at many ramen restaurants here. I have hope though.

Congrats on all the promoting and the movie going well! Sounds like things are really good!

  2. That bar looks like Local Option. It is one of the few venues which would have both Genesee Bock and Central Waters Le Petite Mort.
That was a better selection. !=)

  3. That is because you are visiting the wrong places. Leave the downtown section of Chicago and head over to Logan Square.

Then stop at Longman and Eagle for some drinks!

  4. Even though it's a chain, the best ramen in the Chicagoland area is easily Santouka. (However, it's in Arlington Heights)

In the downtown area, an unexpected place for ramen is Ai Sushi. You can customize your bowl to include butter corn and extra chashu. They also have a Tonkotsu.

Cocoro does a decent bowl as well.

Aviary is supposedly doing a tonkotsu ramen right now, but I haven't tried it yet. (but hopefully very soon!)

  6. I'm really excited that you came to Chicago and are checking out the ramen scene. Honestly, I agree with Wesley R on the ramen scene. The best ramen is in Mitsuwa's Santouka and it's a freaking CHAIN. IMO, most/all the other ramen shops aren't worth checking out because most of the people reviewing them haven't had decent ramen and give unreliable feedback on it (totally agreeing with blukats on this).

If you're free and want to eat non-ramen, I recommend checking out non-ramen places like Avec, Sun Wah BBQ, Honey 1 BBQ, Edzo's, Wiener and Still Champion, and Crisp.

Hope the rest of your stay is amazing!

  7. You have to go to Wasabi. Best ramen in Chicago. Japanese owned and most authentic
